This has thrown the party, already struggling to find a challenger for Governor Linda Lingle (R), into a tizzy. Senator Akaka is well-loved, Senator Inouye (the real power broker) is pretty ticked, Rep. Neil Abercrombie is furious, and I'm not very happy myself.
Case thinks that the state needs new younger blood in the Senate (Akaka and Inouye are both 81), and he thinks he should run now to start "building seniority" for the inevitable time when one or both of the current Senators retire or pass on.
It's pretty arrogant on his part. I wonder how much money his brother (Steve Case, of AOL/TW fame/infamy, depending...) might be willing to throw into the campaign.
What that means is an open House seat; one the Dems didn't think they needed to defend.
